Artist Tricia Poulos Leonard

“I am a graduate of UCLA with a degree in Studio Art. While at UCLA, I studied with Richard Diebenkorn, who greatly influenced my development as an artist. I have since attended workshops with Robert Burridge, Donna Watson, Dike Cole, and John Salminen. My work ranges from representational and impressionist paintings to abstract paintings. My subject matter ranges from landscapes or cityscapes of European and US vistas to abstract painting. My landscape paintings are done in an impressionist painting style. Some are pure watercolor paintings, some acrylic paintings and some combine both mediums. My abstract paintings are usually mixed media. In these,I add collage materials to my watercolor paintings and acrylic paintings.

I have been a fulltime artist since retiring from 30 years in education in 2007. I still enjoy painting the landscapes around me in an impressionist landscape painting style but, recently, I have changed my direction to an abstract painting style. I find this new direction exhilarating! In this style, I can express my innermost emotions. I hope to reach the viewer through a deep understanding of the subconscious directions our minds take us. As I work on a piece, I find that thoughts and feelings that I have suppressed come through the painting as it progresses. I am also influenced by the jazz music I lesten to while creating. You will notice that many of my paintings reference the jazz influence in their titles. Abstract paintings are a visual representation of the abstract quality of music. My work expresses all of the emotions, from pure joy with life to the dark moments we all experience. The pain and pleasure I have felt in my life is expressed through my art.

I have expanded my interest in impressionist painting and abstract painting to include an interest in creativity in general. I have been certified as a Creativity Coach by Eric Maisel and am teaching a course in creativity as well as a beginning drawing course throuh Amador Adult Education. I am also a workshop presenter for Atelier Acrylics. I travel throughout Northern California to demonstrate and promote their paints. I am active in the art community in my home town with memberships in the Pleasanton Art League and Livermore Art Association. Fridays find me with fellow artists, discussing our work over coffee at Border’s Book Store in Pleasanton.Creating art is my first true love. I feel blessed to have the time to spend working at my art and associating with other similarly ‘obsessed’ artists.

As you visit my website, you will notice my watercolor paintings, acrylic paintings, and mixed media abstract paintings are all personal images that convey thoughts and feeling from my perception of the world to the viewers’ awareness. I want my art to enrich the lives of those who view it and to bring them joy.”
