Where Do Ideas for Paintings Come From?

Today, I want to talk about where ideas for artwork come from.

Artists are individuals and as such draw on many different sources for ideas for their artwork. Some are obvious. The beautiful world around us, the people we love, and the animals we take into our lives. These are some of the things that have inspired my art.

An example of these realistic resources is the watercolor painting above, my “Tuscarora Truck”. I love well-used vehicles. They seem to say, “I have served my owner well, now I can rest among the weeds and wildflowers and think about my past loyal connections.” I did this watercolor from a photo I took in Tuscarora, Nevada. It is symbolic of the state that I now call my home – down to earth, utilitarian and friendly.

Walking the Dog in Ely

Other loves of my life are my husband and our dogs. I did this watercolor of them walking on a road in Ely, Nevada. They are trudging along a road in Ely on a warm summer day. The building in the distance would be familiar to anyone from this old Nevada mining town.

Ozziedoggy

I focused in on our dog, Ozzie, in this drawing. I caught him splayed out on my studio floor, looking at me expectantly. (His expectations usually involve food.)

These are views of the world close around me that find their way into my art. The watercolor of the truck and drawing of the dog are available for sale. The Ely painting has been sold, but 13 x19 prints of it are still available.
